A Kotuku kMAG is a compact unit that combines a complete engine management computer for a Lycoming O-Series engine in a compact package.

  • A 5Amp generator that can run the ignition and injection systems completely down to 1500rpm.
  • 4/6 channels of electronic injection. The injectors are designed to run with the standard mechanical fuel injection pump fitted to an O-Series Lycoming engine.
  • 2/3 channels of waste-fire ignition. A compact coil pack is mounted on the rear of each kMAG.
  • A single, high density mil-spec connector that is secured with safety wired screws.

The kMAG also requires a throtte body that has 2 intake sensors. The kMAG is an open-loop system so no throttle position sensor is needed. However normal aircraft operating proceedures need to be followed when opening the throttle.

The kMAG can be configured using the CanFly Commander to achieve optimum performance for most aircraft.

Ignition features

  • Programable in 6 RPM bands and 6 manifold presure bands for optimum tunning.
  • Non-critical install with software configured index using the CanFly Commander.
  • Programable dwell timing, the system is a modern high energy spark system.
  • Starting retard can be set, reduces cranking loads on the starter motor.
  • Battery power is only required for starting.
  • Does not require external sensors on firewall for timing. Is a self-contained unit.
  • uses automotive 14mm spark plugs. Systems are provided with 2 brass plug adapters per cylinder.
  • Spark plug wires are provided in each kit.

Injection features

  • Each cylinder is individually programmed with Volumentric Efficiency in 6 RPM bands.
  • Flow rate for each injector can be adjusted to allow for installation dependencies.
  • Injection dwell is calculated 50 times a second and is optimized for the current manifold pressure and RPM.
  • External panel-mount or custom mixture control.
  • Automatic Lean-of-peak (LOP) or Rich-of-peak (ROP) on each cylinder when in cruise. Needs a kEDU to be installed and configured.
  • Both ECU’s operate in an active mode. No single point of failure.
  • Battery power, and electronic fuel pump is only required for starting.

Other components

A CanFly system is provided with the fuel rail distribution block that has 2 presure sensors. This is mounted to the top of the engine and the fuel lines are then run to the injectors.

The builder is responsible for installing and routing the fuel lines to the distribution block, and to the supplied inectors.

CanFly® bus published data

A feature of the CanFly® system is that each unit published comprehensive information that can be displayed on a range of devices, or stored in a data logger. The kMAG publishes the following information continually:

The kMAG and kEDU cooperate and also generate the following data:

Standard parts

The kMAG is designed to use the standard Lycoming non-impulse gear drive part number LW-15659. Generally one can be recovered from the right magneto in an installation while the second must be purchased. These are available from Aircraft Spruce.

The fuel pump, both electronic and mechanical must be 2Bar pumps. The Lycoming fuel pump LW15473 or other can be purchased from Aircraft Spruce.

The electonic fuel pump is used to start the engine, this differs from the standard Lycoming operation. A suitable pump is the Andair Fuel Boost Pump.
